JPEG compression is used in a number of image file formats. The JPEG standard was largely responsible for the proliferation of digital images and digital photos across the Internet, and later in social media. The entropy coding typically uses Huffman-style variable length codes, and a lesser-used arithmetic coding option is also available in the standard. The JPEG standard uses an 8×8 discrete cosine transform (DCT), a zig-zag scan of the transform coefficients, DPCM prediction of average block values, scalar quantization and entropy coding. The term "JPEG" is an initialism/acronym for the Joint Photographic Experts Group, which created the standard in 1992. Since its introduction in 1992, JPEG has been the most widely used image compression standard in the world, and the most widely used digital image format, with several billion JPEG images produced every day as of 2015.
JPEG typically achieves 10:1 compression with little perceptible loss in image quality. The degree of compression can be adjusted, allowing a selectable trade-off between storage size and image quality.
